JPG
The most widely used: opens everywhere. Ideal for photos, email and social media. No transparency, and a slight loss from compression.
PNG
Intact quality and transparent backgrounds. Ideal for logos, graphics and screenshots. The files are heavier.
WEBP
Modern and very light. Ideal for websites and apps. Some older programs can't open it.
AVIF
Produces the smallest files at the same quality. Ideal for modern websites. Limited support in old software, and slower conversion.
TIFF
Maximum fidelity for professional printing and archiving. The files are very large.
BMP
A raw image with no compression. Only useful for very old programs; the files are huge.
GIF
Few colors: suited to simple graphics and icons, not to photos.
ICO
For program and website icons (favicon). Works best with small, square images.
PDF
One document per photo. Ideal for sending, printing or archiving.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?
